'Imprint 2' Female Gaze

이번 퍼포먼스의 제목은 ‘Imprint 2 – female gaze’다. 2016년부터 진행해온’imprint’ 시리즈의 연장으로, 바디페인팅을 통해 시각적으로 구체화된 내면의 감정을, 캔버스라는 통상적인 미술 작품의 바탕에 찍어내는 작업이다. 이 전의 ‘Imprint’ 시리즈와 다른 점이 있다면, 이번 퍼포먼스 에서는 작가 이외의 대상이 존재한다는 점이다. 그것은 개인의 감정, 개인의 표출에서 발전하여, 이를 타인과의 관계에서 페미니즘적 의미를 부여하는 시도가 되었다. 이것이 ‘Vagina Monologues’의 공연에 동질성을 가지고 참여할 수 있었던 이유다.

 오랜 세월 동안 여성은 주체적으로 보는 존재가 아닌, 남성에 의해 보여지는 대상으로서 존재했다. 그것은 당연하게 여겨지는 문화였고, 여성들은 스스로 객체가 되어감을 인식하지 못한 채 그것에 익숙해졌다. 그들은 어디에서나 품평의 대상이었고, 항상 이에 대비해야 했다. 그러나 이제는 이러한 구조를 타파하여 여성으로서 주체성을 가지고자 한다. ‘Vagina Monologues’의 여성들은 v-day를 통해 주체적으로 목소리를 내며, 나는 그 속에서 응시를 통해 주체성을 표현한다. 오랜 시간 동안 보는 존재였던 ‘남성’을 응시하며, 그에게 나의 감정, 그리고 그를 응시함으로써 발견한 그의 감정을 나(여성)의 주도로 바디페인팅을 통해 시각화한다. 그리고 그는 나의 지시로, 나의 리드로 내 방식인 imprint를 행한다.

어쩌면 단순하게 보일 수 있는 행위이다. 하지만 응시하는 것 만으로도 여성은 객체에서 주체로 변모할 수 있다. 나는 퍼포먼스를 통해 이를 상징적인 행위로 만들고자 했다.

The title of this performance is 'Imprint 2 - female gaze'. It is an extension of the 'imprint' series that has been in progress since 2016, and it is about taking the inner feelings visualized through body painting on the basis of a typical art work called a canvas. What is different from the previous 'Imprint' series is that there are objects other than the artist in this performance. It was developed from personal emotion, personal expression, and it became an attempt to give feminist emotions in relation to others. That's why I was able to participate the performance of 'Vagina Monologues' with homogeneity.

For many years, women have existed as objects to be seen by men, rather than being see as subjectively. It was a culture that was supposed to be taken for granted, and women became accustomed to it without being aware of being an object. They were an object of criticism everywhere and always had to be prepared. Now, however, we want to break this structure and become subjectivity as a woman. The women of 'Vagina Monologues' speak initiatively through v-day, and I express subjectivity through gazing in them. I gaze at a ‘man’ who has been a watcher for a long time and visualizes my feelings and his emotions that I found by gazing at him through body painting with the initiative of me (woman). And he does ‘imprint’ which is my way, with my lead, with my instruction.

It is an act that may seem simple. But just by staring, a woman can turn from an object to a subject. I wanted to make this a symbolic act through my performance.
